EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
