'It's like they never miss a pass': The Swans' Ethan Galbraith resumes battle with Manchester City.

Ethan Galbraith can't help but smile as he recalls the dramatic final moments of his team's stunning fightback victory against Nottingham Forest in the League Cup. That match ended with Galbraith briefly donning a supporter's spectacles following the post-goal scrum.

As the match entered added time, Galbraith rattled the woodwork with a long-range shot from outside the box, and his teammate promptly hammered in the loose ball before racing off toward the crowd to mark the goal, with supporters congregating around the players.

Remarkable Recovery

The result capped an extraordinary recovery given the team had trailed 2-0 deep into the second half. During the euphoria, there was some collateral damage. He shared, "There was a spectator sort of calling out and we were wondering: 'What's he on about here?' Then we spotted the glasses. It was a funny incident putting them on. We are on the pitch as players but we're individuals, too, so to have a bit of craic with the fans is always good."

Pep Guardiola Test

That win earned a fourth-round game at home against Pep Guardiola's side on Wednesday, a club Galbraith pushed hard at the comparable phase of the FA Cup with the London side in February. He had a prime vantage point when the underdogs took the lead in spectacular fashion, with Jamie Donley's first-time shot from about long distance going in via the crossbar and the opposition keeper. It feels criminal that it was recorded as an own goal.

"You would have expected they would've given it to him for attempting the shot from that distance," commented Galbraith, who played in the middle before switching to right flank after they changed shape. That meant getting to grips with City's winger, with whom he traded tops, and the winger was among the Manchester squad who paid tribute to the way his former team played positively.

City's Quality

"Physically they are exceptional but even the simple things and simple things, they can just execute repeatedly," he explains. "It feels like they complete every delivery and they understand how to manage and neutralize a game. You can think you're all right and then without warning they will just thread a ball past your midfield without you even seeing. You have to be switched on throughout of the game. It requires a tough attitude and attention just to keep pace."

New Chapter

The club were keen on Galbraith in January and fought off rivals to secure him in the summer in a £1.5m deal. He became a favorite as a crowd pleaser across multiple campaigns at Orient and has quickly achieved similar status in his new home. At his previous team he joined forces once more with Richie Wellens, who previously gave Galbraith his initial sustained opportunity in senior football on loan at his loan club from Manchester United. Then came a temporary move at lower division the Manchester club, before he departed his boyhood club.

Development Path

"I was likely a somewhat inexperienced going into men's football. I think many athletes would say development squad matches is completely distinct. Sometimes it appears possession is exchanged without much intensity. There are limited tackles or duels. Once you start playing men's games you have to learn quickly."

International Recognition

He has shown that growth for his team and nation, excelling for his national side, who could still reach the international competition next summer via the qualifying rounds and for whom he has featured in the past five games, including home and away fixtures against a football powerhouse. The ex-coach, Galbraith's previous international manager, paid him the supreme accolade, saying he was Northern Ireland's "creative maestro" given how he manipulates the ball and his knack for a game-changing assist.

Early Days

This represents quite the ride for the kid from the local area in Glengormley, just outside the capital, who was raised observing his dad, the elder Galbraith, also a midfielder, play for a local club.

Old Trafford Memory

The player's sole appearance for United came in the away trip in 2019, a continental tournament trip to the Kazakh capital, where they featured on an artificial pitch and the stadium roof was shut owing to temperatures of freezing cold. "That proved to be a extended travel and it was cold out there," he recalls, grinning. "The preceding week, myself and quite a few of the young lads practiced as a group, so that aided our adjustment. Just to travel with the first team and make an appearance at the end was amazing."

Leaving United

How difficult was it to move on from Old Trafford, the club he transferred from aged 16? "This turned out fairly simple, because I arrived at the moment where I understood I wouldn't break through at the top level. I'm extremely thankful for the experience gained but it got to the point where I believed I needed to go my own route, join a smaller club and play men's football. Now I'm steadily progressing again."

Welsh Adaptation

This occurs during the middle of the day at the team's practice facility but Galbraith has an appointment at 5pm: a learner's exam, another progress toward getting on the road. Before his recent move to Sketty, the young professional was a frequent passenger in Swansea's nicknamed fun bus, a minibus driven by club employees, Pete and Howard, which ferries players to and from sessions and fixtures.

"My companions include the Portuguese player, the Brazilian, Malick Yalcouyé – a former passenger used to be in it but has started driving. It's nice to interact with the lads but I'm aiming to be the subsequent individual to stop using the bus and driving. Franco enjoys practical jokes; he's frequently playing tricks."

Fan Interactions

During his time at his former club, Galbraith would mix with fans on public transport after starting his journey at his base. "I tried|I attempted|My aim
