Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for an extended period when multiple of them floated into the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend floated over the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
