WHO Issues Warning Over Critical Scarcity of Obesity Medications

Less than 10% of patients that would benefit from obesity jabs like Wegovy are able to get them, states the global health agency as it issues its first advice on the medications.

With in excess of 1,000,000,000 people worldwide now obese, it is advocating for more widespread and fairer access to GLP-1 medication.

Per forecasts, over two billion are projected to be living with obesity by 2030 if no action is taken.

"Our latest guidelines acknowledges that excess weight is a lifelong illness that can be managed with thorough and lifelong care," remarked its chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Substantial prices, insufficient output, and distribution challenges are key obstacles to widespread availability to the treatments that can aid individuals in losing considerable body mass, says the organization.

GLP-1 Therapy Scarcity

Even in the current most optimistic scenario, the production of such drugs could only cover around 100 million people – under 10% of eligible patients, according to the health organization.

The guideline encourages governments and firms to increase availability, via strategies including voluntary licensing.

A patent on a key compound – the core component of the drug Wegovy – is scheduled to end in a number of countries in 2026.

The Way Weight-Loss Drugs Function

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone to reduce digestion speed, reduce hunger and boost the sense of being full so people consume fewer calories.

People typically see weight reduction after several weeks of beginning the once-weekly jabs.

Studies suggests people may see weight return within a year of stopping the medication, as their typical food cravings resume.

Being overweight or obese raises your chance for experiencing diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and specific malignancies.

Excess weight concerns people in all nations and was responsible for 3.7 million deaths worldwide in 2024, per the WHO.
